     HISTORY AND ETHNOGRAPHY

The Revenidas in Vilaxoán de Arousa

Article written in Arousa's Diary on April 18, 2004

Already a few years ago, concretly in the year 1996, he was writing in the Magazine Avante and in the Correo Gallego an article that was referring to the word REVENIDAS.

Was commenting that, taking of Antonio Meijide Pardo's writings writer and investigator on the Catalans and the salazón in Galicia (Spain) in the XVIIIth century, I extracted in conclusion that this word could come from those ships that in the mentioned century  of Portugal to loading the salty sardine on Vilaxoán's port, to estes ships were calling them in the neighboring country "bascotes". In Vilaxoán they were known like "revenidos", since the singladura was of going and return, a species of line fixes.

Of beginning, with many objections, I took this meaning of "revenidos" without giving him a definitive conclusion. Investigating a bit more, for motive of the explanations that Carlos Rey was giving in his day in the Galician Mail, refuting the concept that I was giving him to this word, I believe that Carlos hiba for good way. Confirming everything what he was saying, I have to comment that the scale inclined for his writings. In Galician since in Castilian(Spanish) the re-come word means: faded, torn, the etymology does not clarify anything, since torevenidas comes from the Latin reveniere; to turn a thing to his primitive condition. But the verb "to "re-see" in Galician (very slightly secondhand verb in the Galician language) means to roast, to be hot or to scorch or that the sardine " recoming is cooked to the ember.

Now we go to the tastiest part of the sardine "revenidas". In the famous book of Galician kitchen the "Hash" of M. Puga and Parga that was edited in 1905, gathered at the beginning of last century a recipe of the sardines "revenidas" to Manuela la Palla, neighbor of Vilaxoán, saying hereby: " the months of Julio, August, September and part of October it is when the sardine is in food, and therefore, when it constitutes a delicate plate, submitting it to the following preparation.
" There take the sardines that are wished, wash, dry off and cover of fat salt, leaving them to remain like that from twelve to 24 hours. They place then in a gridiron and put on embers, leaving them on the fire until they take hold for another side. They must be served in the moment mísmo of to go out of the gridiron "

Going deeply a bit into the history on the holiday of the "revenidas" into Vilaxoán, I can say that this event was done for the thirties coinciding with the holidays of the Virgin of Carmen. In 1933 in the Magazine "Galicia" edited in Madrid it was commenting in an article on the exaltation of the sardines "revenidas" in Vilaxoán, textually he was saying: " if Carril presumes in justice, for his excellent breeding-places of seafood, only ones in the world, to Vilaxoán de Arousa nobody disputes the supremacy of his "revenidas" sardines that they do not admit rival into the known seas .......... and furthermore ".

After the Civil war this Gastronomic - cultural event nevermore was done as holidayof the people, not being anyone that another sardinada occasionally for particular people. It was tried to recover in the year 1996 by the Residents association, thing that was achieving subsidy of the Consellería of Fishing and programs already filmed of the TVG, and for reasons foreign to the Association and Xunta of Galicia assembly parallel and bombarded by the Major Boss of the Confradía Ramon Soto did not do to itself.

Gathering a few writings of the ethnography vilaxoanesa for the poet Gonzalo Bouza Brey, where he was saying: " Vilaxoán, is probably, one of the peoples of her Should laugh at Arousa Bay that better preserved and defended the signs of identity of a people across from his history, his idiosyncrasy, the carnival, the masks, the burial of the sardine, his popular holidays and the "revenidas". And on the revenidas and the rowers it has written a few popular very beautiful songs that they say this way: " rich well they are the xoubas / already major the sardines / but since they are good / in Vilaxoán revenidas "/. The young boys of Vilaxoán / are better than those of Palmeira / take the oars in the hands / make irritate the trainera/.

Vilaxoán celebrates the weekend after the 16th of July the annual festival of El Carmen. The maritime procession is the most outstanding service. The parties also include a song festival called “Vilaxoán Canta”, an event in which the neighbours sing together, as a massive choir, some popular songs. To make the fiesta complete, some open-air night dances and folk groups performances are held on the streets.

In July, 2004 there was celebrated the holiday of the Recomings REVENIDAS, event organized by the Residents association in representation of his president Teo Cardalda, Commission of Holidays represented by Xoán Quintáns and by the Producer Misto Mister represented by Xoán de Vilaxoán.
